Our Story
In 2004, thoughts of establishing a Children’s Advocacy Center for Thomas County began. There was a particularly egregious criminal case of child abuse that left its mark on all who were involved. Since Thomas County lacked its own Children’s Advocacy Center, investigators were forced to take the victim child and non-offending caregivers to another county (an hour away) so the child could receive a proper forensic interview and forensic medical examination from trained professionals specializing in the field of child abuse.
Identifying the need for formal coordination and provision of services for children at risk or impacted by abuse in Thomas County, stakeholders began research on how to meet this need for local children. With strong advocacy from key stakeholders at the District Attorney’s Office, Thomas County Sheriff’s Office, Thomasville Police Department, Department of Family and Children’s Services, and other concerned citizens, the foundation of The Treehouse was formed. Through extensive fundraising and community awareness efforts, The Treehouse opened its doors to the community in 2011.
The Treehouse has become a home for children and families during crisis and is the only organization of its type in Thomas County. Our staff’s training and expertise ensure specialized service is available to all children and non-offending caregivers, free of charge.
